TRAVEL DIARY – DAY 1 FROM LYTHWOOD LODGE TO MOUNT PARK GUEST FARM

30 August 2020, 9am. The PHAT GM RIDES team set off on the first leg of our 1000KM journey from the KZN Midlands to Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape.  It was a cold and wet start from Lythwood Lodge in Lidgetton, but team spirits were high, and we were grateful for the support we received from all over the country.

As we set off on our route, we were met with enthusiastic faces and surprises along the way, amid the very cold, grey weather.  Under a train bridge in Lidgetton, a group of locals packed out in song just for us.  The voices of our countrymen and woman rose in an anthem of Shosholoza. A goosebump, tear-jerker moment, with the most beautiful natural acoustics imaginable.

We stopped at St Ives to say a quick hallo to the General Manager, Ashley Bloxham, and take a breather.  Once again, we were reminded of the great beauty our country has to offer!

At Beverly Cottages, we were welcomed by Kate Kelly who prepared snacks, coffee and tea!  An unexpected courtesy that warmed our hearts and our cold, tired bodies.

About 35Km from our day 1 destination, we were joined by 9 young men from Howick High School seeing us safely to Mount Park.  We wrapped up our ride at Impendle with 55.7Km under our belt.

Riding in a group has many benefits.  Most of all the support and encouragement along the way!  Even a push up the hill when it is needed, comes in handy.  The ride would not have been the same without the crew from Hattons Cycles PMB, Giant and Compendium Insurance Brokers, as well as Rivers Labour Consultants, Gordon Belton.  Thanks for the support!

Tonight, we rest at the beautiful Mount Park Guest Farm, with our hosts Ian and Sally Field.

The staff are wonderful, and we had the friendliest welcome.  Rooms are beautiful and clean.  More importantly the shower was hot and the beds comfy.  The staff follow the Covid-19 safety procedures which made us feel very safe.  We were spoiled to a lovely supper prepared by Janet, Hlenguwe and Patience in the kitchen, and the fires in the manner house helped us get rid of the day’s chill and wet shoes.  Strangers quickly became friends – a trait that can only be best defined by experiencing our unique South African hospitality.
